Mr Lee said: "In Singapore, I'm worried about what the people think of me. As long as the people understand that what I am doing is in their best interests and there is no alternative that is better than what, not just me but my successors, are offering, we are not doing too badly. "The final test is not whether you are rated by Amnesty International or Human Rights International, but the satisfaction of the people you are governing towards you and what you have delivered." -

WEll, what happened at IMF 2006 is a joke. the govt are like teachers telling the students( singaporeans) to behave themselves!
god.

We were told to behave ourselves like good children for our visitors. Taxi drivers, don't talk politics! Waiters, waitresses, sales clerks, must smile and give them a good impression. Brush up on your French or Spanish. Poly students, make sure you speak proper English! Kids, behave. -gayle

yes, i am disgusted and even more embarrassed at how the govt handle the situation.
that is, immaturely.
It is only but a few days but singapore had offended the world bank associates by banning accredited activists that SINGAPORE HAS INVITED, to the meetings. The govt came out with an excuse, saying they pose a threat to the security.

And guess what theme the World Bank has adopted?
GOOD GOVERNANCE
Look, what's the irony here?

Three Singaporeans who were planning to distribute anti-World Bank and IMF flyers at the Suntec City area have been detained and their computers seized. They are being investigated under the Printing and Processing Materials Act, which states that those in posession of materials that contain "any incitement to violence or counselling disobedience to the law" could be jailed up to 3 years, fined, or both.

The incident represents a setback to the IMF/World Bank, which has sought to improve relations with non-governmental organisations that have accused them of conducting policies that have ignored the plight of the world's poor. A record 500 NGO representatives are accredited to attend this year's meeting.

"This is a major blow to the credibility of the IMF/World Bank. It's terribly embarrassing since the World Bank had adopted good goverance as the theme of this year's meeting," said Antonio Tricarrio with Campagna per la Riforma della Banca Mondiale, who was one of those banned. -gayle

I must say, this is quite a huge setback to both the world bank and the host, Singapore.
However, i am proud to know that Singapore is hosting this event because of its authoritarian reputation.

In case u are as dumb as me, Authotitarian means:
relating to, or favoring a concentration of power in a leader or an elite not constitutionally responsible to the people

Let me give you this statement to ponder about

The fact that the Singapore government is extremely concerned about terrorist acts is something we cannot corroborate."

Associated Press/International Herald Tribune

Do you get the hidden meaning?
How sacarstic.
Now, Now, Singapore had a bad day and will have a hard time regaining its reputation.
And now,
Let's look at the newspaper headings of various newspapers:

"World Bank says Singapore breached deal"
- Houston Chronicle.

"World Bank's Wolfowitz says Singapore backtracked on agreement"
- Bloomberg.

"World Bank says Singapore breached deal"
